Are we following the Way or getting in the way?

This week, we explore the concept of God's mercy and our response to it. The central theme revolves around Romans 9:14-18, where Paul discusses God's sovereignty in showing mercy. We're challenged to consider whether we're following the Way or getting in the way. The story of Pharaoh serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of hardening our hearts against God. Just as a river flows around obstacles, God's purpose will be accomplished with or without our cooperation. This teaching encourages us to humble ourselves before God, trusting His timing and purpose for our lives. It's a call to embrace God's mercy and allow His life-giving river to flow through us to others.

Daily Devotions

Day 1: Understanding God’s Mercy

Romans 9:14-18 (NIV) What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God's mercy.

Reflection: God gives mercy to whoever He wants. It's not about what we do; it's about God’s kindness. Think of God’s mercy like a river that flows to us, even when we don’t deserve it.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is mercy?
  2. Have you ever received something good that you didn’t earn?

Day 2: Humility and Trust

1 Peter 5:5-7 (NIV) Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Reflection: Being humble means thinking about ourselves less and about others and God more. When we trust God and stay humble, He will lift us up at the right time.
