Learning how to suffer well

There's no question that we'll face hard times and suffering in this life; ALL OF US WILL SUFFER. The real question is, how will we suffer? In this teaching from the middle part of Romans 8, Paul explains how the Spirit not only helps us to suffer well, but also uses our sufferings to birth beautiful new works of grace and comfort.

Daily Devotions

Day 1: Understanding Our Identity in Christ

Sermon Reflection: We learned that in Romans 8, we find freedom in our identity with Christ. When we believe in Jesus, God says we are not guilty of our wrongs anymore. That means no matter what we do or how we feel, we are not to feel trapped by guilt or fear. This is the freedom we have because of Jesus!

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean to you to have freedom in Christ?
  2. How can knowing you're not guilty change the way you live?

Additional Scripture: Galatians 5:1 – "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

Day 2: Suffering Can Lead to Greater Things

Sermon Reflection: Like Olympic athletes who train hard for the big competition, our tough times can prepare us for something greater. The message reminded us that our challenges are like training that leads to God’s glory in our lives.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Can you think of a time when something difficult led to something good?
  2. How can you keep hope during hard times, knowing God is working on something greater?

Additional Scripture: James 1:2-4 – "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."

Day 3: The Groaning of Creation
